The snow leopard is perfectly adapted to the cold conditions of its habitat. Its thick coat becomes even denser in winter and its small round ears help retain heat. With its broad, snowshoe-like paws, the snow leopard can move quietly on the snow without sinking. Its spotted coat allows it to blend perfectly into the snowy mountains, providing ideal camouflage to surprise its prey.
Threats and conservation
The snow leopard is threatened by poaching, habitat loss, a decrease in prey, and conflicts with local communities. Conservation efforts, led by organizations such as WWF and the Snow Leopard Trust, aim to reduce human-wildlife conflict, protect its habitat, and combat poaching. Scientific initiatives also help monitor and preserve the species.
