This bird is considered the closest relative of the Dodo of Mauritius, extinct since the 17th century. Being quite gregarious, the Nicobar pigeon lives in colonies but forms stable pairs.
Threats and conservation
Despite its status as a threatened species, the Nicobar pigeon continues to be hunted for its meat and through illegal trade. It is also seriously threatened by the introduction of invasive species (rats, cats) on its territory.
