Like most ducks, the mandarin duck displays marked sexual dimorphism: males are distinguished by their vivid colours while females, by contrast, wear a more discreet brown plumage. After the breeding season, males undergo a moult during which they lose their beautiful colours, then resembling females more closely.
Threats and conservation
In Asia, the decline of this species is due to the destruction of its habitat. In 1980, the Japanese government even ordered three thousand pairs from Dutch breeders to reintroduce these ducks and repopulate the country’s lakes.
