The little egret’s black bill resembles a true dagger: long, thin and slightly downward-curved. Its long black legs and yellow feet distinguish it from the great egret. During the breeding season, it develops different types of ornamental feathers at the back of its head, lower neck, back of its wings and on its back.
Threats and conservation
Little egret populations appear stable and the species is generally not considered threatened despite the decline of wetlands. Once hunted for its ornamental feathers used in fashion to decorate hats, the little egret is today protected in certain regions.
