The demoiselle crane, also known as the Numidian crane, is one of the smallest crane species. Its nest, fairly rudimentary, is usually built directly on the ground, often near a body of water. Cranes in migration adopt the V-formation to save energy: the individual at the front creates a beneficial air trail for those following, and gives up its place when tired.
Threats and conservation
The demoiselle crane is not considered endangered. However, the reduction and degradation of its habitat and the use of pesticides represent threats both in its natural environment and along the migratory routes it travels. This species is protected throughout the national territory.
