Baer’s pochard displays sexual dimorphism. Both males and females have a dark greenish-black head and neck. Males are distinguished by their larger size and more vibrant plumage compared to females.

Threats and conservation

Baer’s pochard is a critically endangered duck, with fewer than 300 individuals estimated to survive in the wild. Despite research on this species, many uncertainties remain regarding the main threats facing these birds.
